Nvidia Announces Dual GPU GTX 690 Set For Release May 3rd

Nvidia warned us it was coming, but until very late last night we had no idea what they were talking about, or if we should even be excited. Would they announce lower end Kepler parts to fill out the midrange? Would they announce you could finally “buy” a GTX 680? Expectations were high when Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun took the stage for his keynote in Shanghai China, and my friends, meet the all new dual-GPU $999 GTX 690.
The GTX 690 has yet to hit the benchmarks, but considering that under that fancy plated aluminum heat sync is a pair of GTX 680’s, we are going to go ahead and say what you’re looking at here is probably the fastest card money can buy. In total, the GTX 690 has 3,072 CUDA cores, running at a 915MHz base clock, with a 1019MHz boost clock. Both of those numbers are slightly lower than those found on a standard GTX 680, but not by much, and its certainly understandable considering how much heat your generating in such a small area. The memory clock sits at 6Ghz, and each GPU has access to a dedicated 2GB block of GDDR5 RAM totaling 4GB of frame buffer.
The design of the card itself is also pretty amazing. Aside from the plated aluminum on the outside, it is also fitted with polycarbonate windows on the front to give it a very unique look. The card runs on a 10-phase power supply, and each GTX 680 core will have its own water-vapor chamber as you can see from the shots below.
Nvidia promises limited availability of the GTX 690 by May 3rd, with add-in board partners joining the party on May 7th. If you have $999 burning a hole in your wallet, and you need bleeding edge performance, its safe to say the GTX 690 will be the card to beat for the foreseeable future.

MSI Aims Ivy Bridge-powered GT70 and GT60 Notebooks at Gamers
As you all know, Intel announced the launch of its much anticipated 22nm Ivy Bridge processors earlier today. Intel is counting on these third-generation Core processors for the success of ultrabooks, which it hopes will be able to check the rampant growth of tablets and, in the process, conquer a large chunk of the mobile PC market. But ultrabooks will not be the only products to make use of Ivy Bridge chips; there will also be plenty of all-in-ones, desktops and notebooks. In all, over 570 Ivy Bridge-toting systems are expected to ship in 2012. The MSI GT70 and GT60 are two such products. Hit the jump for more.
Unveiled at CeBit, the 17.3-inch GT70 and 15.6-inch GT60 are MSI’s latest Gaming Series notebooks. Both notebooks feature a full HD anti-reflective display, 3rd generation Intel Core i7-3610QM processor (2.3-3.3GHz), Intel Series 7 HM77 chipset, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M graphics, Killer E2200 Game Networking, Steel Series backlit keyboard and Dynaudio 2.1 speakers.
“Armed with the newest NVIDIA graphics, Intel chipset and Killer Game Networking, the GT70 and GT60 redefine mobile gaming and delivers superior performance that exceeds expectations of even the most demanding gamer,” said Andy Tung, vice president of sales at MSI US, in a press release. “MSI invites gamers to experience the rush of finding the perfect mobile gaming notebook.”
The GT70 comes in four different pre-configured flavors ranging from $1,549.99 to $1,999.99. Its smaller sibling, though, only has a single model, priced at $1,499.99. Covered under a two-year warranty, all these models are now available for pre-order online.

Asus Z77/H77 Motherboards Getting Thunderbolt Support Via An Expansion Card
When you’re talking the Z77 chipset, one thing springs to mind first and foremost: Ivy Bridge. Intel’s upcoming CPU isn’t the only newcomer to the game, though, as Z77 is the first Intel desktop chipset to support the company’s high-speed Thunderbolt interface — assuming a Thunderbolt controller is on the mobo, of course. Most of Asus’ Z77/H77 ‘boards have lacked an integrated controller, but it looks like Thunderbolt compatibility is coming thanks to an upcoming expansion card.
Asus told VR-Zone that the majority of the company’s H77/Z77 retail mobos will be able to accommodate the Thunderbolt expansion card, which is set to launch on the 27th of this month. It’s no freebie, though; you’ll have to lay out an unspecified amount of cash to acquire a Thunderbolt controller card. Once you have one in hand, it’ll hook up to the TB_HEADER pictured above.
Here’s the list of supported motherboards:
- Maximus V Gene
- P8Z77-V Deluxe
- P8Z77-V Pro
- P8Z77-V
- Sabertooth Z77
- P8H77-V
- P8H77-M Pro
